Barcode scanner (camera or image)
Point your camera at a code or drop an image; GS1 DataMatrix, QR, GS1-128, EAN/UPC and GS1 DataBar codes are read, and GS1 content is split into its fields and checked. The image never leaves your device; reading happens in the browser.
The image and the decoded content never leave your device; reading is done in your browser.
Keep the code inside the frame, with enough light and no glare. The camera stops once a code is read.

The decoded code appears here. GS1 content is split into fields and checked for check digit, date and character rules.
Reads in this session
No reads yet. The history is kept in memory on this page only and is deleted when you close it.
The tool only decodes and checks the format of the code; it does not look up the GTIN, serial number or product in any national or other system. Read success depends on print quality, light and camera resolution.
Would you like to read and verify your labels in the field, or integrate serial number data with your systems? Let's talk about your existing line.

How to use it
A
Start the camera and bring the code into the frame, or choose, drag or paste an image containing the code.
B
Once read, the format and content appear; GS1 content is split into GTIN, serial number, expiry, batch and so on, and checked.
C
Copy the human-readable or raw content; download the reads of the session as CSV.
02
Which codes can it read?
Of the two-dimensional codes the tool reads GS1 DataMatrix and QR code; of the linear codes GS1-128 (Code 128), EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E and GS1 DataBar. The serialisation codes on pharmaceutical and medical device packs are usually GS1 DataMatrix.
The reader recognises GS1 content from the symbology identifier: ]d2 means GS1 DataMatrix, ]Q3 GS1 QR, ]C1 GS1-128. For GS1 content the data is split into fields by application identifier; EAN and UPC codes are interpreted as GTIN and their check digit is verified.

Camera, image and privacy
Reading runs entirely in your browser: the camera image and any image you load are neither sent to a server nor stored. The reader component (WebAssembly) is loaded from this site; no third-party server is contacted.
Browsers open the camera only on a secure connection (HTTPS) and with your permission; if you decline, or the device has no camera, read from an image file instead. You can drop a screenshot or a photo of a label straight in, or paste it from the clipboard.

If a code will not read
The most common causes are poor light, glare and reflections, a code that is too far away or blurred, and a damaged quiet zone (the empty margin around the code). Move closer so the code fills the frame, and turn up the brightness when scanning a code on a screen.
If the code reads but the fields look wrong, the cause is usually the separator (FNC1 / ASCII 29). Some handheld scanners do not transmit the separator or the symbology identifier (]d2); check the scanner's GS1 setting. To judge print quality, a verifier device grading to ISO/IEC 15415 or 15416 is needed; this tool does not measure print quality.
FAQ
- Is the image or content I scan sent anywhere?
- No. The camera image and any uploaded image are processed only in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored. The read history is deleted when the page is closed.
- Which code types can it read?
- GS1 DataMatrix, QR code, GS1-128 (Code 128), EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E and GS1 DataBar. Other code types are not read by this tool.
- The camera will not open. What can I do?
- Make sure the page is opened over HTTPS and that camera access is not blocked in the browser. Another application may be using the camera. If it still fails, upload a photo or screenshot of the code as an image file.
- Why do I get a “separator missing” warning?
- When a variable-length field such as the serial number or batch is followed by another field, a separator (FNC1 / ASCII 29) must sit between them. Some scanners do not transmit this character; check the scanner's configuration.
- Does it also verify the record in a national system?
- No. The tool only decodes the format of the code and checks field rules (check digit, date, character set). The record of the product or serial number in any system is not queried.
