GS1 Digital Link generator

Enter your domain, the GTIN and, if you wish, batch, serial and date. The tool verifies the check digit, checks the values against the GS1 character set, and gives you the percent-encoded Digital Link URI with the equivalent element string.

The root of the address. Enter your own domain or your resolver provider's address; you may add a path such as /dl. Without a scheme, https is used.
8, 12, 13 or 14 digits, check digit included. In the link it is padded with leading zeros to 14 digits.
Up to 20 characters, GS1 character set 82.
Up to 20 characters. Spaces and accented letters are not in the set.
Up to 20 characters. Together with the GTIN, the serial number identifies a single item.
YYYY-MM-DD or YYMMDD. In the six-digit form, 00 for the day means "last day of the month".

The link is built in your browser; the values you enter are not sent anywhere.

  • The GTIN was padded with zeros to 14 digits in the link.
  • id.gs1.org is GS1's general resolver address. In production use your own domain or your resolver provider's address.

This tool does not draw a QR code. Copy the link into your own QR code generator and print it as a QR code or a GS1 DataMatrix.

link = domain + /01/GTIN-14 + /22/variant + /10/batch + /21/serial + ?17=YYMMDD · values are percent-encoded; the path order is fixed

The tool only formats the link; it does not allocate GTINs, register the link with a resolver or test that it leads to a correct page. Field, length and character limits are taken from memory from GS1 Digital Link and the General Specifications; verify them against the current specification before publishing. This calculation is not legal or technical advice.

How to use it

  1. A

Enter your domain and the GTIN; add batch, serial and date if needed.

  2. B

Check the warnings and the link parts; the GTIN check digit and the character set are verified automatically.

  3. C

Copy the link or the equivalent element string; produce your QR code with your own generator.

02

What is a GS1 Digital Link?

GS1 Digital Link is a syntax that places GS1 identifiers such as the GTIN in an ordinary web address. The same QR code can be read as a product number at a retail checkout and can also send a phone camera to a product page.

The address is a domain followed by identifier pairs: first /01/ and the 14-digit GTIN, then qualifiers if any. Serial, batch and variant describe the item in more detail, so they sit in the path; data attributes such as dates are added as query parameters.

03

Path order, encoding and character set

The order in the path is fixed: 01 (GTIN), then 22 (variant), 10 (batch) and 21 (serial), where present. Date fields (17, 15, 11) are appended as a query parameter such as ?17=281231. Writing the same data in another order is not the same address.

Batch, serial and variant values use GS1 character set 82: digits, upper and lower case English letters and a set of punctuation marks. Spaces and accented letters are not in it. Because some characters in the set have a special meaning in an address (/, ?, #, %), the tool percent-encodes values; only letters, digits and - . _ ~ stay as they are.

AI 21 and AI 10 are each at most 20 characters. A serial number requires the GTIN, which is why the tool does not accept a serial without one.

04

Turning it into a QR code

This tool produces the link; it does not draw the QR code. You can paste the link into your QR code generator and print it as a QR code or a GS1 DataMatrix. Which symbol suits which label surface depends on the product group and your trading partner's requirements.

The resolver behind your domain must send the scanned address to the right page. Before going live, try the link with a real phone and a real checkout scanner; long batch and serial values make the symbol larger.

FAQ

Why is the GTIN 14 digits in a Digital Link?
The standard asks for GTIN-8, GTIN-12 and GTIN-13 to be padded with leading zeros to 14 digits in the link, so that every item is shown in one form. The tool does the padding and first checks the check digit on your input.
Should batch and serial be in the path or in the query?
Batch (10) and serial (21) are key qualifiers and go in the path after the GTIN. Dates such as expiry are data attributes and go in the query. The tool applies this split.
Can I put accented letters or a space in a batch number?
No. Batch, serial and variant use GS1 character set 82; spaces and letters such as ç, ğ, ö, ü are not in it. The tool reports these characters as errors. Use the ASCII equivalents.
What if I do not have my own domain?
You can experiment with a general resolver address such as id.gs1.org, but in production you need your own domain or your resolver provider's address; you define how the link leads to your product page.
Does the link the tool produces work as it is?
The link format is right, but for it to reach a page your domain must serve these paths. The tool does not set up or test the redirection; resolver configuration must be done separately.
