GTIN-14 case converter

Paste your item numbers and choose the indicator digit for the case or pallet. The tool validates the check digit of each input, calculates the GTIN-14 and its new check digit, and lets you copy the list or download a CSV.

GTIN-8, GTIN-12 or GTIN-13, check digit included. If you give a 14-digit GTIN its indicator digit is replaced. Write "number;indicator" on a line to set the indicator for that line alone. Spaces, hyphens and a leading (01) are ignored. At most 500 lines.

Conversion runs in your browser; the numbers you paste are not sent anywhere.

GTIN-14 = indicator + 12 digits of the base number (without check digit) + check digit · check: weighted sum 3-1 from the right, rounded up to the next ten

The tool only calculates; it does not allocate numbers. You must assign the case number under your company's GS1 prefix, according to your packaging configuration. Master data entry, printing and trading partner rules must be verified separately; this calculation is not legal or technical advice.

Let's make your case and pallet numbers consistent with your master data, printer and camera flow.

How to use it

  1. A

Paste GTIN-8, GTIN-12 or GTIN-13 numbers, one per line.

  3. C

Check the result table; copy the list or download the CSV.

02

What is a GTIN-14 and how is it built?

A GTIN-14 is a 14-digit number that identifies a higher packaging level of an item, such as a case, carton or pallet. The first digit is the indicator digit; it is followed by the 12 digits of the base item (such as a GTIN-13) without its check digit; the last digit is the newly calculated check digit.

If the base number is a GTIN-8 or GTIN-12 it is first padded with leading zeros to 13 digits. Because the indicator changes, the check digit changes too; deriving the number by simply adding a digit by hand gives a wrong result.

03

What does the indicator digit mean?

The company assigns the indicators 1 to 8 itself according to its packaging configuration; GS1 does not fix their meaning. Giving the same base item different indicators for a 6-pack case, a 12-pack case and a pallet is common practice; document which is which in your master data.

Indicator 9 is reserved for variable-measure items. Indicator 0 gives the 14-digit form of the base item and does not count as a new packaging level.

Every packaging configuration containing a different quantity needs its own GTIN. For cases whose content quantity varies but which are sold under the same GTIN, fields (02) and (37) can be used together; check your trading partner's rules for this.

04

Barcode and master data

A GTIN-14 on a case is usually printed as ITF-14 or as GS1-128 with the (01) application identifier; GS1 DataMatrix can also carry (01). Which one to use depends on the product group, the surface and the trading partner's requirements.

Before sending a number to the printer, link it in your master data table to the base item, the content quantity and the packaging level. You can download the bulk list as CSV and use it in your master data work.

FAQ

Can I make a GTIN-14 by adding a digit in front of a GTIN-13?
No. Once the indicator digit is added the check digit must be recalculated: a GTIN-14 is indicator + 12 digits of the base number + a new check digit. The tool does this calculation.
Which indicator digit should I use?
A digit from 1 to 8 chosen by your company; its meaning is not fixed. Use a separate indicator for each packaging level of the same base item and keep its meaning in your master data. 9 is reserved for variable-measure items.
Do I need a separate GTIN for every case?
Every packaging configuration with different contents that is ordered separately as a trade item gets its own GTIN. GS1 rules and your trading partner's requirements determine the detail; consult your GS1 member organisation.
Which company prefix should a GTIN-14 come from?
Your own company's GS1 prefix. Building a GTIN-14 from someone else's number would mean using an identifier that belongs to its owner. The tool only calculates; it does not allocate numbers.
What happens if the check digit of the input is wrong?
The line is marked as an error and the correct check digit is shown; no GTIN-14 is produced from a wrong base number.
